What is the difference between FDM and SLA 3D printing?
FDM 3D printing builds parts by melting and depositing filament layer by layer, making it well suited to functional prototypes, larger models and durable components. SLA 3D printing uses UV light to cure liquid resin, producing smoother surfaces and finer detail for applications such as miniatures, jewellery, dental models and highly detailed prototypes. FDM is generally easier and more affordable to run, while SLA offers better detail but requires resin handling, washing and post-curing.
What materials can FDM 3D printers use?
FDM 3D printers use filament materials such as PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA and TPU. Some models can also print engineering materials such as nylon, polycarbonate and fibre-reinforced filaments, depending on the nozzle, hotend temperature, heated bed and enclosure.
